Amy Tran, owner of Yue Wa Market, was the first Chinatown-based participant in the Healthy Markets LA (HMLA) program run by the LA Food Policy Council. Tran, who has never had formal business training, shared that running a grocery store has been a learning experience primarily shaped by trial and error. The HMLA program has provided a unique opportunity for her to gain in-language knowledge, resources, and a supportive network as she explores strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of her 17-year-old store.
Yue Wa Market was recognized as a Good Food Champion by Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez at the Los Angeles Food Policy Council's annual Food Day event last October. With the program's assistance, Yue Wa Market continues to grow and become a leader in providing healthy food access to the Chinatown community.
Healthy Markets LA partners with neighborhood markets and corner store owners to increase access to healthy food and provide support with business development. Their work focuses on low-income communities where redlining and disinvestment have resulted in limited access to fresh, whole foods and produce. Store owners receive training, guidance, and upgrades to their stores, transforming them into beacons of healthy, affordable food. As a result, communities have more options for living a healthy life.
